5 JAN 20 Iraqi Parliamentary Statement and The Implications for American Strategic Interests

NEC-SE recommends that everyone read the statement issued today by the Iraqi parliament on the drawdown of the “international coalition forces” established to fight ISIS in Iraq.

The statement calls for the Iraqi government to “cancel the request for assistance from the international coalition to fight ISIS because the military operations and warfare have ended in Iraq and victory has been achieved.”

This statement does not directly state that U.S. forces must leave Iraq. It only references the force structures agreed upon in 2014 by Iraq and the coalition for fighting ISIS. However, it may become a predicate for the Iraqi Government to require the future withdrawal of U.S. forces.
